Go deeper into the music that influenced the Beatles in their early days, with this interactive option for The Beatles Through 1962: Influences and Early Recordings. Join a community of like-minded music enthusiasts, led by Beatles expert Walter Everett, Professor of Music at the University of Michigan and author of The Beatles as Musicians, What Goes On, and The Foundations of Rock . Each week you'll have free access to the 45-minute "All Together Now" presentation, then you'll meet in a small group seminar with Dr. Everett to explore topics like the relationship of lyrics to harmony, melody, rhythm, tone color, formal structure, and recording techniques in the songs the Beatles covered through 1962, how that music influenced their own work, and their own songwriting from Quarrymen days through their first two EMI singles. Precursors to be examined will include Chuck Berry, The Coasters, Lonnie Donegan, The Everly Brothers, George Formby, Buddy Holly, Carole King, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, The Shadows, Phil Spector, Larry Williams. Research and present on a topic of your choosing, or just share in the camaraderie and discussion. The course will be conducted on Zoom. Enrollment is limited to twenty-five participants on a first-come first-served basis.
